Emerging nanomaterials for novel wound dressings: From metallic nanoparticles and MXene nanosheets to metal-organic frameworks

There is a growing need for better wound dressings that can effectively treat injuries caused by accidents, burns, surgeries, and diabetes. When wounds are serious, it is important to help them heal quickly to avoid long-lasting infections and the formation of biofilms, which are difficult to treat.

Nanotechnology has recently played a major role in developing new, advanced wound-healing treatments. New types of nanomaterials have been created to act as antibacterial agents or to carry drugs that help control infection.

This review looks at recent research on how newly developed nanomaterials are being added to modern wound dressings and how each type contributes to the healing process. Studies show that:

  • Metallic nanoparticles help kill bacteria and support tissue repair.
  • Metal oxide nanoparticles help reduce inflammation and encourage new tissue growth.
  • MXene nanoparticles improve how cells attach and multiply.
  • Metal-organic frameworks allow drugs to be released in a controlled way.

More research is still needed to fully understand how these nanomaterials work and to optimize their use in wound healing.
