Nano-Polyoxotungstate [Cu20P8W48] Immobilized on Magnetic Nanoparticles as an Excellent Heterogeneous Catalyst Nanoreactors for Green Reduction of Nitrophenol Compounds

In this study, researchers used a special compound, Cu20-polyoxotungstate [Cu20Cl(OH)24(H2O)12(P8W48O184)]25−, attached to a magnetic base to create an eco-friendly and efficient method for reducing harmful nitrophenol compounds like 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (2,4,6-TNP). They made a magnetic nanocatalyst called [Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-Cu20P8W48] and checked its properties using several techniques, including FT-IR, SEM, TEM, VSM, and TGA.

This nanocatalyst was very good at turning nitrophenol compounds into aminophenol compounds. They used a UV-Vis absorption spectrum at different times to monitor the reaction’s progress. Under the best conditions, they achieved 100% conversion and selectivity in changing 4-NP to 4-AP and 2,4,6-TNP to 2,4,6-TAP.

After the reaction, they recovered the nanocatalyst using a magnet and reused it for the next cycle. The results showed that this nanocatalyst could be used for eight cycles without losing much efficiency. Finally, they suggested a possible mechanism for how this reaction happens based on their results.
